Oskar Hallatschek and colleagues report findings on microbial traffic jams

Professor Oskar Hallatschek and colleagues report findings that suggest that proliferating yeast and bacteria can exert mechanical forces that alter their environment. These microbial traffic jams may be relevant in microbial pathogenesis and biofouling—the process in which the growth of bacteria or other organisms interfere with machinery.
